WELCOME TO DOWN EAST!!

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’ve arrived Down East – well – wonder no more!!!  Down East Council’s project of installing two welcome signs, one at each of the entrances, is now complete!  The project took approximately two years to complete, with massive time spent on design, permits from the county and CAMA, fund raising, and coordinating installation!!

Read more about the project, donors, as well as Down East Council on our webpage here.

This is just the beginning of what Down East Council can do to help our thirteen communities.  We have been striving to have two representatives from each of our communities at our monthly meetings.  We have yet to meet that goal; however, we want to encourage residents in all communities to join us as we move forward with more projects and opportunities to help Down East!

Comments are welcome!

Core Sound Decoy Festival

The 29th Decoy Festival is now in the history books!  From all accounts it was a tremendous success - - again!   If you were unable to attend this year's festival, we have the opportunity to share some of the photographs of the festival by Gordon Allen.  Mr. Allen is a landscape-wildlife photographer and he did a fantastic job documenting the carvers as well as their outstanding work.  Here we are displaying a small sampling of his photographs of the festival!

Waterfowl Weekend

Waterfowl Weekend at the Core Sound Museum was a huge success!!  Even the rain on Sunday couldn't damped the spirits and excitement of those that attended.  It was truly a great time.  One of our folks, Dan Williams, captured some of the fun Friday night.  Here are a few of his pics!!  Hope you enjoy.  And if you didn't attend this year, get it on your calendar for next year!!

DOWN EAST COUNCIL

Down East Council will hold their monthly meeting Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 pm.  The meeting will be held at Williston United Methodist Church.

Down East Council is a representative group of all thirteen communities in the area with the goal of serving as a unifying voice to promote our livelihood in a growing economy, celebrate and honor the heritage of the people as well as protect our fragile coastal environment.  Down East is also unique in that our communities do not have the benefits afforded by being structured like towns or municipalities, and therefore has lacked a means to voice its needs, concerns, and desires for the future.  The framework of the council is to have two representatives from each community.  Meetings are held monthly and are open to the public.

There's Something About Core Sound

Core Sound - there is something about this place, isn't there?  When we stop and reflect on this place we call home, we think of so many happy times, families and memories, and livelihoods that have been part of our heritage for several hundred years.

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center is doing their part is helping preserve this history and culture.  If you haven't visited the museum, you have truly missed out on a great experience.  So make it a date and visit soon!

One way in which the museum is preserving our history is by telling our stories.  As part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration, short vignettes will be presented throughout the year that tell the people and their communities.  If you haven't viewed any of these vignettes so far, you can see them here on our website, as well as Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center's website.   They are well worth your time!!

Businesses Down East

One of the many great assets about Down East is definitely the business community.  There are well over 300 local businesses from grocery and convenience stores, boating supplies, furniture store, gift shops, recreation-related stores, restaurants/fast food businesses, servicerelated such as construction and landscaping, and many businesses operating without a store front.

We at Down East Community News want to highlight what is available in our communities.  We have a Business Directory on our site that we will be keep as current as possible.  Please look through the directory and help us ensure all Down East businesses are included!  The listing is free because our goal to promote our business community!

We encourage you to let us know if a business has not be included - any and all businesses!

But most importantly - patronize these businesses!!

The children also had an amazing opportunity to visit Santa Land.  There they had snacks, wrote letters to Santa, worked on various crafts, and the kids were able to pick out a gift for their mom or dad!  It truly was a wonderful time!!

The museum was humming with excitement as several volunteers were decorating the entire museum!!  It was a wonderful day!!   Let the holidays begin!!!!

The gift shop was also open with tons of great items for those on your shopping list.  Make the Core Sound Gift Shop your first stop when you begin your Christmas shopping this year!

Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center: Preserving Heritage and Culture Down East

Core Sound Museum is a place that belongs to all the people Down East that is preserving our heritage through various displays, oral histories, and video presentations.  The newest display just erected honors the permanent collection donated to the museum by Eugene Willis and his grandson Tommy Salter.  The pictures below give you a tiny view of the artifacts.  To truly appreciate this display and many others, you need to visit the museum yourself!

No Harbor In a Storm

Heber Guthrie, Harkers Island native, has a tremendous ability to tell a story about times gone by.  You can find some of those stories in our website.  This latest short story describes how folks from the Island took care of their boats in a storm.

"Many fishermen on Harkers Island lost their boats in storms due to no safe harbors."

Read the rest of the story on our "Tell Me Some Stories"  page!

1905 Livesaving Crew To Be Remembered

THIS EVENT CANCELLED - RESCHEDULED FOR JANUARY/FEBRUARY!

Sarah D. J. Rawson Lifesaving Crew to be Remembered November 12

The 387-ton, three-masted schooner Sarah D. J. Rawson, with a crew of seven, sailed from Georgetown, SC for New York with a full cargo of lumber on 2 February 1905. While standing under short canvas in a SSE gale at 5:30 PM on the 9th, the vessel stranded in the breakers on the south side of Lookout Shoals. She became a total loss. As soon as the schooner struck the master gave orders to take in sail. While the crew reformed this work, a heavy sea swept the decks and carried Jacob Hansen, a Norwegian seaman, into the surf. He soon disappeared.

Had it not been for the brave lifesaving crew of Cape Lookout Station, all hands might have been lost. The fate of the Sarah D. J. Rawson and her crew would never have been known but for the unflinching heroism of the crew of the Cape Lookout Life-Saving Station. Each was subsequently awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for extreme and heroic daring in saving life from the perils of the sea. Those awarded for their rescue of the six crewman on Sarah D. J. Rawson included Keeper William H. Gaskill, Surfmen Kilby Guthrie, Walter M. Yeomans, Tyre Moore, John A. Guthrie, James W. Fulcher, John E. Kirkman, Calupt T. Jarvis, and former Surfman Joseph L. Lewis.      Go to this link to read more about this event/
